Research

My research interests center around improving outcomes in breast cancer patients through combining lifestyle interventions, including diet and exercise, with standard cancer therapies. Overweight/obesity and physical inactivity increase the risk of developing breast cancer, and appear to contribute to a worse prognosis after diagnosis. Research is needed to determine how nutrition, weight management and exercise following a diagnosis of breast cancer can affect outcomes such as risk of recurrence as well as outcomes important to quality of life such as fatigue, depression and other chemotherapy-related side effects. I completed my Master of Science in Clinical Research working on a dietary counseling and exercise intervention in breast cancer survivors. I am currently working to determine whether specific types of high quality diets can impact breast cancer prognosis, to identify a novel lifestyle linked biomarker that is both prognostic and modifiable through healthy lifestyle, and to improve the quality of life of cancer survivors through healthy lifestyle modification. I am the site PI for multiple phase III breast cancer clinical trials as well as investigator initiated trials of lifestyle modification in breast cancer. I see patients with breast cancer at the Siteman Cancer Center South County Campus.
